Official Launch Event of Pakistan’s First Climate Governance Report

On Thursday, Pakistan marked a significant milestone in its climate action journey with the official launch & dissemination event of the country’s first-ever Climate Governance Report. This groundbreaking report, a collaborative effort between Transparency International Pakistan and Climate Finance Pakistan, promises to revolutionize the landscape of climate governance in the nation.

At the heart of this report lies a first-of-its-kind comprehensive audit of Pakistan’s climate governance framework. During the official launch event, representatives of federal ministries & multilateral stakeholders (such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) made their presence known by establishing effective networks.This convergence of government and multilateral stakeholders underscored the critical importance of building capacity for effective climate governance.

Mekaeel Malik, CEO of Climate Finance Pakistan, and Dawar Hameed, CFP’s climate consultant, delivered a compelling presentation summarizing the key findings of the report. Backed by robust data and thorough research conducted by CFP’s dedicated team, the presentation provided a comprehensive overview of Pakistan’s climate governance landscape.

A distinguished panel of experts engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on various facets of climate governance. The panel included esteemed representatives such as Mr. Tobias Haque, Country Economist at The World Bank; Mr. Hiz Jamali, Senior Climate Change Officer at the Asian Development Bank; and Ms. Ayesha Khan, CEO of the Civil Society Coalition on Climate Change. Representatives from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) also participated, highlighting the importance of effective monitoring of GCF funds and compliance with fiduciary mechanisms.

One of the key concerns raised during the panel discussion was the need to incentivize private firms to shift towards renewable energy sources and lower emissions. The GCF representative emphasized the importance of aligning investments with climate goals to ensure sustainable development.

Ms. Ayesha Khan shed light on innovative strategies for mitigating the impact of climate change, including focusing on reproductive healthcare to manage population rates and promoting gender equality to reduce the vulnerability of marginalized communities.

The official launch of Pakistan’s Climate Governance Report marks a significant step forward in the nation’s commitment to combating climate change. By fostering transparency, accountability, and collaboration across sectors, Pakistan is poised to chart a sustainable path towards a greener future.
